Lab News

Members of the Miller lab had a great time presenting and learning at ASCB 2025 in Philadelphia, PA!

December 2025

Thrilled to share that the first paper from the Miller Lab is now posted on bioRxiv!
This work highlights how fission yeast use distinct size-sensing pathways to adapt their geometry under different environmental stresses.
Now under peer review — excited for this next step and so proud of my team that made it happen!

A few of us had the opportunity to attend the International Fission Yeast Meeting August 3-8th, which brings together researchers worldwide who use this model system to study cell size control, cell polarity, and other fundamental cellular processes. These discoveries deepen our understanding of human biology and inform the development of new therapeutics.

Some highlights of the meeting include:

  • A research talk by Nobel Laureate Sir Paul Nurse
  • An evening Gala
  • My participation in a panel discussion on career choices, funding strategies, and setting research directions
  • A Boston Red Sox game

I also had the opportunity to give a talk at the International Fission Yeast Meeting held at Boston College! Grateful for the chance to share our latest research and connect with such a vibrant community of scientists!

Elena and Ben shared their research with the global fission yeast community, presenting posters at the International Fission Yeast Meeting!

Elena Cabral has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship – the nations most prestigious undergraduate award in the sciences!
Elena is a Junior Biology major at Providence College and has been an integral part of the lab since Spring 2024. For her Goldwater application, she wrote a research proposal based on her project, “How cells stay the right size under changing environments.” Elena is the fourth Providence College student to receive this honor and the first from the Biology department — a truly outstanding achievement!
